First sergeants are typically the senior non-commissioned officers of company (battery, troop) sized units. Due to their seniority and position at the top of the company’s enlisted ranks, they are also sometimes unofficially but frequently called “top”, “top sergeant,” “top soldier,” “top kick,” and “first shirt.”
