The phrase “fore,” which means “look out!” or “heads up,” was originally meant to be used before teeing off, but nowadays most golfers only scream it after they’ve blasted an inaccurate shot toward another player.
Others said, the phrase “fore-caddy,” which refers to a caddie standing behind the golfer to see where the ball falls, may have been the word’s original meaning. The word “fore-caddie,” later abbreviated to “fore,” was often shouted by these caddies to alert them to approaching golf balls.
