A cesarean section is a surgical procedure in which incisions are made through a woman’s abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby. It is also called a C-section.

The name “cesarean section” comes from the story of Julius Caesar, who was born by this method. His mother, Cleopatra, had a difficult labor and was advised by her physician to have a C-section.

Today, cesarean sections are performed for a variety of reasons, including if the baby is in a breech position, if the mother has a health condition that makes vaginal birth risky, or if the labor is not progressing.

In the United States, about one in every three births is by C-section. This is a higher rate than in most other countries. Some experts feel that the rate of C-sections is too high and that more women should try to have vaginal births.

Though some say it’s named after Julius Caesar—who was born by this method—the more likely explanation is that it is derived from the Latin word caesarius, meaning “of the womb.”

A cesarean section (c-section) is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. A c-section may be planned in advance if the mother has a medical condition that makes a vaginal delivery too risky, or it may be done as an emergency procedure if complications arise during labor and delivery.

C-sections are generally safe, but they are major surgery with potential risks and complications. That’s why, if possible, most mothers opt to deliver vaginally.

A cesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a type of surgery used to deliver a baby. This surgery is usually performed when a vaginal delivery is not possible or when it is not safe for the mother or baby. There are a number of reasons why a cesarean section may be necessary, and it is important to understand why this type of surgery is performed.
