The word “oven” has been in use since the early 13th century, and its origins are somewhat unclear. It is thought to be derived from the Old English word “ofen,” which means “oven, furnace, or kiln.” However, some linguists believe that it may also be related to the Latin word “furnus,” which means “underground chamber or cellar.” Whatever its origins, the word “oven” has become a staple of the English language, and is used to refer to a wide variety of cooking appliances.

Oven (from the Latin word fornax) is the chamber appliance used to cook food. It has been with humans since the Stone Age, when they were first used to cook meat and starchy foods. The Dutch word ”  oven” was adopted into English in the early 17th century to refer to the then-new kitchen fixture. In a ”  oven”, food is prepared by heating it for an extended period of time at relatively low temperature, ideally with the moisture inside the food converted to steam and escaping from the food. The most common oven is a device made of a hollow chamber (a room or container) that gets hot enough to cook, or that retains heat long enough for a chemical change. This heat is provided by combustion (heating a liquid to a boil), by electricity, ceramic or induction heat, or from solar radiation.
