Urías, the son of Carlos Urías and Juana Isabel Acosta, played with the Mexico national Youth Team in his early teens. Urías met Los Angeles Dodgers scout Mike Brito when he was only 14 years old. Mike Brito had scouted Fernando Valenzuela in the late 1970s. In June 2012, the Dodgers became amazed at the talent of 15-year-old Urías at a showcase in Oaxaca. 

Julio Urias was known as ‘el culichi’ at the very beginning of his career. He was raised in the Culican city of Mexico. Everyone in that city loves him and that makes him feel incredible and more proud. He was scouted at the age of sixteen from Mexico the same year the team found Yaisel Puig.
