Even though Greenwich is the location of the “zero meridian,” GMT was dubbed “Zero Time” or simply “Z- Time.”
The letter “Z” became “Zebra” in the phonetic alphabet used by radio flyers at the time to communicate. The call sign was changed to “Zulu” when the alphabet was changed.
Also because NATO phonetic alphabet word for Z is “Zulu,” UTC is also known as “Zulu time.” This is especially true in aviation, where the universal standard is “Zulu.”
This ensures that all pilots, regardless of location, use the same 24-hour clock, avoiding confusion when flying across time zones.
